PROPHECY FORETOLD ,
that the house of mauntell would fall...
For generations, the prophecy of the magi was considered nothing more than a myth. Magic was a way of life in Astvion and while some feared the magi, most respected them for their contributions to populace. House Mauntell ruled justly and were loved by most, if not all of, their subjects. No one had any reason to believe that the magi who worked for the crown would have any reason to overthrow them.
However, in 1080 King Garris Mauntell began to grow restless. The prophecy that so many regarded as legend was causing him sleepless nights. He dismissed the magi in his service, slowly becoming more and more suspicious of their motivations.
In 1081, Garris proclaimed that commoners born with magical abilities posed a threat to the crown. He ordered any common magi be arrested and detained in specific areas to be kept under strict supervision. Some of the nobility were wary of this doctrine, but none dared question the good King Garris.
Six months later, the detention quarter could hold no more magi. The living conditions had become deplorable and there was simply no room for anyone else. Garris's advisors begged him to simply let this obsession go, for the sake of his people but he refused. Instead, he began executing those who dared speak up against the living conditions followed by the old and the sick. Eventually, all those being sent to the "magic quarter" were being slaughtered. Being common and magic was a death sentence.
When magi of noble birth began to speak out against Garris, he labeled them traitors and had them executed as well. People began to whisper that the king had gone mad. Meanwhile, his obsession with the prophecy continued to grow. By 1086, when Garris passed away peacefully in his sleep, there were almost no magi left in Astvion outside of the royal line.
Our story begins two hundred and fifty years after the purge, in a time when magic is almost unheard of. Only the oldest noble families can lay any claim to their magical bloodlines and the few born with magic are born with only the weakest powers. Even the Grand Mage, who trains the few noble children of Astvion, cannot remember a time when it was safe to openly use magic.
For the last fifteen years, magic has been gaining strength. Noble children are being born with gifts that haven't been seen in their families for generations and commoners report that some of their children have been born with strange powers. King Godfrey is overjoyed that magic is returning to his people at last, even if no one can explain the occurrence.
Of course, there are those who are suspicious of this sudden rise of magic. Lord Cristian Greaton remembered the prophecy of the magi and urged the king to follow in his ancestor's footsteps and get rid of the perceived threat. Godfrey flatly refused and Cristian took the matter into his own hands. He built up a group of followers, who called themselves Saviors, preaching that the magi were a threat to each and every citizen of Astvion.
Soon, the murders began. It took three years for Godfrey to discover that Cristian was the mastermind behind the Saviors. When he found the truth, Godfrey ordered Cristian executed for treason, but the damage had already been done. He had gathered followers from all walks of life, and Cristian's work continued without him.
In order to protect the young magi, Godfrey has opened the castle to any children who have shown magical ability. He has also retained as many experience magi as he can to help educate them. Little does know, the prophecy is already coming true. The anomalies are grown, even if they do not yet know their own destinies....
